Is the divorce that occurred between the spouses a revocable or an irrevocable divorce?

We thank the questioner for her keenness to know the Shar'i ruling. What we understood from her question is that her husband uttered the divorce more than three times while he was conscious, and he cohabited with her during the 'iddah as if nothing had happened. If this is the reality, then she has become irrevocably divorced from him with a major divorce since the third pronouncement. And cohabitation after that was not permissible for them, but they are not described as adulterers due to their ignorance of the ruling. The obligation upon them is to repent and to separate from each other, and she cannot return to him until she marries another husband in a marriage of desire, not for the purpose of making her lawful for the first husband. If the second husband divorces her, then there is no objection to her returning to the first. If the situation is different, she should clarify it further. And a Muslim must not reside in a country where he cannot uphold his religion.
