A woman undergoing her waiting period ('iddah) after a revocable divorce is treated like a wife; a divorce can still be issued to her before the end of her 'iddah. If her husband divorces her three times, even if two of these divorces occurred during her 'iddah, she becomes irrevocably separated from him (baynunah kubra). However, if he divorces her only twice, he has the right to take her back as long as she is within her 'iddah. If the 'iddah ends, she becomes separated from him with a minor irrevocable separation (baynunah sughra).

If the husband says to his wife, "Your affair is in your hand," she has the right to divorce herself: - With one revocable divorce, which is the view of the Shafi'is. - With three divorces, which is the view of the Hanbalis, unless the husband intended only one divorce. - According to the Malikis, if the wife chooses more than one divorce, the husband has the right to revoke it if he claims he intended only one divorce and swears an oath to that effect.
