The question

Is trading in Emaar Properties stock, given that the company owns a non-Islamic bank representing 4% of its value, Islamically forbidden? And is it permissible to continue trading in it while donating 4% of the profits as charity? What about past profits if the trading was forbidden or involved an element of doubt?

The answer

It is permissible to deal with the aforementioned company in its permissible activities, such as real estate. The existence of other prohibited activities by the company does not affect this. There is no objection to receiving annual profits resulting from investing shares in permissible ventures. However, it is not permissible to trade in the company's shares or own them if it does not differentiate between what is lawful and unlawful, such that the share represents an undivided stake in the company's assets, including the interest-based bank.
