The question

What is the ruling regarding a wife's abstention from her husband after thirty years of marriage, knowing that she was forced to marry him and felt uncomfortable with him throughout this period, and that her husband is aware of her disapproval? Does the sin fall upon the family, the husband, or the wife?

The answer

A mother is not permitted to compel her daughter to marry someone she does not desire, just as a husband is not permitted to proceed with marrying someone without his wife's consent. A wife must not deprive her husband of his right, and her prolonged silence may be considered as consent on her part. It is not permissible for a wife's dislike of her husband to prevent him from exercising his right; however, she is allowed to seek divorce (ṭalāq) or khulʿ (dissolution of marriage initiated by the wife). Khulʿ is not recommended after a long companionship and having children, as dislike might transform into love with the help of Allah.
