Do bad deeds cancel out good deeds or affect them, just as good deeds cancel out bad deeds?

Evil deeds affect good deeds, and some of them nullify them, such as:

1. Disbelief (Kufr), polytheism (Shirk (definition)), and apostasy, based on the Almighty's saying: ﴿And had they associated others with Allah, then [all] that they used to do would have become worthless for them.﴾ [Al-An'am:88], and His saying: ﴿If you associate others with Allah, then surely your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers.﴾ [Az-Zumar:65]. 2. Missing Asr prayer, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever misses the Asr prayer, his deeds are rendered void." Some scholars have analogized other prayers to it. 3. Consulting soothsayers, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever comes to a soothsayer and asks him about something, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights." 4. Oppressing others. 5. Keeping a dog without lawful permission, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever keeps a dog, a qirat (a measure) will be deducted from his good deeds every day, except for a dog for guarding livestock, farming, or hunting." 6. Drinking alcohol, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever drinks alcohol, Allah will not accept his prayer for forty mornings." 7. Violating Allah's sacred limits in privacy, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, I know people from my Ummah who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like white mountains of Tihamah, but Allah will make them like scattered dust.... But they are a people who, when alone with Allah's prohibitions, violate them." 8. Reminding others of one's charity (Minan) given, based on the Almighty's saying: ﴿O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of it] or [other] injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people.﴾ [Al-Baqarah:264].
