Do good deeds wipe out all sins or only some of them? And do bad deeds wipe out good deeds to the same extent?

Good deeds erase bad deeds, as evidenced by texts from the Quran and Sunnah. This applies to minor sins according to the majority of scholars, but major sins require repentance. Sins related to the rights of other people are not expiated except by satisfying those whose rights have been infringed upon. However, bad deeds do not erase good deeds, with the exception of polytheism (shirk), which nullifies all actions. Good deeds may contend (with bad deeds), and what matters is which predominates. Some scholars are of the view that bad deeds can nullify good deeds just as good deeds can nullify bad deeds. The verse: "And do not be like she who untwisted her spun thread after it was strong," does not indicate that bad deeds erase good deeds; rather, it pertains to the breaking of oaths.
