The Zahiri method adheres to taking the literal meaning of texts without considering reasoning or analogical deduction (). They do not look into the underlying causes (ilal) or meanings. Although their view is better than that of the proponents of mere opinion (Ahl al-Ra'y al-Mujarrad), they are criticized for their rigidity in adhering to the literal meaning and for not considering the underlying causes and the wisdoms intended by the Lawgiver (Shari').
