What should I do if I have wronged someone and wish to redress the injustice and seek their forgiveness and pardon, but I do not know their whereabouts or am unable to communicate with them?

One who has committed an injustice must hasten to rectify it in this worldly life, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever has committed an injustice against his brother, let him seek his forgiveness for it, for there will be neither dinar nor dirham [on the Day of Judgment]. [Let him do so] before it is taken from his good deeds for his brother. If he has no good deeds, then some of his brother's evil deeds will be taken and cast upon him."

If the injustice involves money, it must be returned to its owner. If reaching the owner is impossible, then the money should be given as charity on his behalf. If the owner has died, the money should be given to his heirs.

If the injustice involves backbiting or harm, and it is possible to seek forgiveness from the person, then this should be done. If that is not possible, then the unjust person should repent sincerely to Allah, along with seeking forgiveness for the person whose right was infringed upon. In this case, it is not necessary to inform or seek permission from that person.
