Is it better to pursue Shar'i (religious) knowledge or Kifa'i (communal/sufficient) knowledge, and what do we need today? And is the pursuit of obligatory Shar'i knowledge exclusively limited to schools?

Sacred knowledge is superior to worldly sciences (such as economics, medicine, and engineering), due to its nobility, the engagement of its learner with the texts of revelation, and the perpetual need of Muslims for it. It is obligatory for a Muslim to learn what is necessary for him concerning his religious affairs, and the Ummah needs specialized religious scholars. The Ummah also needs worldly sciences that make it independent of the disbelievers. Seeking knowledge can be done through schools, individual study, listening to audiotapes, or reading.
