What is the ruling on the marriage contract (aqd al-qiran) without mentioning the names of the two spouses therein?

For a marriage to be valid, both spouses must be specified by name or by a distinguishing characteristic. The pronouncement of the officiant, "I marry you (to her)," is sufficient to identify the husband, and describing the woman as "his client" (or "the one for whom he is acting as an agent") is sufficient to identify her. However, it is preferable to state the names explicitly to avoid disagreement, bearing in mind that a woman cannot marry herself off or appoint an agent for her marriage if her guardian is present.
