What is the worldly punishment for zina (unlawful sexual intercourse), and does the application of the hadd (prescribed punishment) for zina negate the worldly punishment? Can the one who commits zina avoid punishment through repentance and remorse? And what if Islamic Sharia is not applied in a particular country?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made the prescribed punishments (hudud) expiations for major sins. So, whoever commits any of these sins and is punished for it, that punishment serves as an expiation for him. And whoever Allah conceals, his affair is left to Allah. As for one who repents and turns to Allah, Allah will forgive him.

If the prescribed punishments do not reach the ruler, then whoever Allah has concealed and has not repented, his affair is entrusted to his Lord. However, if the prescribed punishments reach the ruler and are established, then they must be carried out and are not abrogated by intercession.
