"Engagement" may refer to the legal marriage contract without consummation, in which case the woman is a wife, and it becomes permissible for her husband to do with her what is permissible for a husband to do with his wife, with her obedience to her husband becoming obligatory after consummation. "Engagement" may also refer to merely seeking marriage, in which case the suitor is considered a stranger to her, and thus private seclusion between them is not permissible. Communication with her is also not permissible except to the extent of religious necessity when looking at her in the presence of her guardian.
