The Almighty's saying: (Men are guardians over women, by virtue of what Allah has preferred some of them over others, and by virtue of what they spend from their wealth) establishes the guardianship of men over women and grants them the right to discipline them in cases of insubordination. The verse elucidates two reasons for this guardianship: 1. Allah's preference for men over women due to their greater intellect, sound management, and strength, which distinguishes them with prophecy, imamate, leadership, some rituals, and a larger share in inheritance. 2. The man's expenditure on the woman, including the dowry and other expenses.

Interpreters have stated that the man's guardianship means he is her head, her elder, and her ruler. He has the authority to discipline her, and he is her protector and caretaker. He is responsible for jihad and expenses, and she must obey him in what is good.

As for the reason for the revelation of the verse, weak and mursal hadiths have been reported, one of which states that a man slapped his wife, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, intended to administer retribution, whereupon the verse was revealed.
