Is there zakat on caraway crops?
Caraway is a spice that improves food. Zakat is not obligatory on its essence according to the majority of scholars. However, if it is sold and its price reaches the threshold (nisab) and a year (hawl) passes, either on its own or combined with money or commercial goods, then Zakat becomes obligatory on it. The madhhab of the Shafi'is, Malik, Abu Yusuf, and Muhammad is that there is no Zakat on trees other than date palms and grapevines, nor on any grains except those that are staple foods and can be stored, and there is no Zakat on vegetables.
