Is purchasing an 'Umrah trip for a specific amount in exchange for receiving a waived profit amount considered usury (riba)?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the transaction between you two is based on you paying your friend the expenses he has already incurred in organizing the trip in exchange for what he is owed by the association, then this is usury (riba), because monetary currencies are subject to both types of usury (riba al-fadl and riba al-nasi’ah). It is absolutely impermissible to sell paper currency for other paper currency or for other monetary denominations on a deferred basis. Nor is it permissible to sell the same denomination of paper currency for itself with a difference in amount, whether on a deferred basis or hand-to-hand. What your friend intended to do, which is to waive a portion of his profits in exchange for accelerated payment, is also impermissible.
