What is the ruling on disposing of money that was collected to rent an apartment for a friend of my relative, who no longer needs it?

The donated funds for a woman, intended for renting an apartment, are considered as follows: If the donors intended the donation for her need, and the need has ceased, then the funds should be returned to them. Otherwise, they are not to be returned to them if the woman has taken possession of them, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The one who takes back his gift is like a dog that vomits and then returns to its vomit." However, if she has not taken possession of them, then the owners have the right to reclaim them. Every effort must be made to return the funds to their known owners. As for the unknown owners, their share should be given in charity on their behalf.
