What is the ruling of the religion on the marriage of a young man who met a girl over the phone and their relationship continued for a year?

The love that a person seeks through excessive looking at women, or conversing with them, or contacting them, is forbidden, even if it is with the intention of marriage, due to the evils that result from it. A zealous Muslim would not approve of such behavior for his female relatives because he loves for them protection and chastity. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "None of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." There are legitimate ways for marriage that must be followed. We advise the questioner to fear Allah, repent from what has passed, and hasten to marry the girl if she is suitable for that.
