What is the wisdom behind the prohibition of lying in jest, even if both parties know it is untrue and impossible?

Lying is blameworthy and is not permissible in seriousness or in jest. It can lead to fabricating lies and harming others, and it instills the habit of contriving and spreading falsehoods. Therefore, adhere to truthfulness, for it guides to righteousness and Paradise. Beware of lying, for it guides to wickedness and Hellfire. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against lying to make people laugh, saying: "Woe to him who speaks and lies to make people laugh thereby. Woe to him! Woe to him!" Lying is the root of all blameworthy acts, and when combined with seeking laughter that deadens the heart, it becomes the most abominable of evils. The one who tells fabricated stories to make people laugh is disobedient to Allah and His Messenger, and deserves lawful punishment.
