What is the ruling on a latecomer (masbuq) who, after the imam’s salām, delays moving to the empty back row where he is standing to leave a gap for those who have completed their prayer?

The latecomer is not required to move from his place to complete his prayer in order to obtain a sutra, or due to the passage of worshipers, because there is no evidence to support that. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen holds the view that the latecomer does not take a sutra, and he makes up his prayer without a sutra. When the latecomer stands to complete his prayer, he is in the ruling of a person praying alone, so he should prevent anyone from passing in front of him, and it is not permissible for anyone to pass in front of him.
