Is it permissible for a latecomer to complete his prayer with other latecomers?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the Imam says the salām, and one of the latecomers (masbūqīn) wishes to be led in prayer by another like himself (a latecomer) to complete what he missed of the prayer, then on this matter, there are two views among the people of knowledge. Most jurists incline towards prohibiting it. It is more appropriate for every latecomer to complete his prayer without being led by another latecomer, because each of them has already attained the virtue of congregational prayer by catching at least one rak'ah.
