What is the ruling of Islamic law concerning the phrase "ya tawil al-umr" (O long-lived one) or "tal umruk" (May your life be long)?

It is permissible to supplicate for a long life, based on what is narrated in the Sunnah regarding the Prophet's supplication for Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah prolong his life and increase his wealth and offspring. Some scholars have conditioned the permissibility of this supplication on it containing benefit for Muslims, or by restricting it to obedience to Allah Almighty, such as saying: "May Allah prolong your life in His obedience." Moreover, supplicating for a long life does not contradict the fact that lifespans are predetermined, because that is considered in light of what is in the records of the angels.
