Is it permissible to travel for condolences?

Traveling a long distance to offer condolences was not part of the practice of the righteous predecessors (Salaf). However, there is no harm in it if it is for a relative or a friend, due to the comfort and solace it provides, on condition that it does not involve hardship or neglect of an obligation. The preferred approach is to call by phone to offer patience.
