Does the Hanbali school differentiate between seminal emission due to intentional and unintentional thoughts, taking into consideration their view that the fast of one who repeatedly looks and then has seminal emission is invalidated, or does seminal emission due to thought not invalidate the fast at all according to them?

The majority of Hanbalis hold that fasting is not invalidated by thinking, whether it is an accidental or intentional thought that leads to seminal emission. They cite the hadith: "My Ummah has been forgiven for mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they inwardly contemplate, as long as they do not act upon it or speak of it," and because there is no text or consensus indicating that it breaks the fast.

However, some scholars, such as Abu Hafs al-Barmaki and Ibn Aqil, believe that fasting is invalidated by intentional thinking that leads to seminal emission, because it is a voluntary act.

Although fasting is not invalidated by thinking, a Muslim should not surrender to evil thoughts. Rather, he should occupy his heart and mind with what is beneficial and good for him in his religion and worldly life.

If the thought leads to seminal emission, ghusl (ritual bath) becomes obligatory, even if the fast is not invalidated.
