What is the optimal way for a couple to deal with each other, given the husband's suspicion regarding his wife's sincerity after discovering her correspondence with foreign men, and her pledge not to repeat it, while his distress persists and he is unable to forgive?
Marital life is rarely free of problems, and the spouses must exercise wisdom in solving them. It is not permissible for the wife to leave her husband's house without his permission, except for a legitimate excuse. The basic principle for a Muslim is well-being, and it is not permissible to falsely accuse the wife. If she repents from past mistakes, what has passed should not be considered. The husband should not hate his wife if he dislikes a trait in her, for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No believing man should hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." The husband must teach his wife matters of her religion and be a role model for her. Divorce is disliked except when necessary, and it may be forbidden, but it can become a solution if coexistence between the spouses becomes impossible.
