Is seeking revenge to restore my right forbidden or permissible?
Responding to abuse and punishing in kind is permissible if the aggression is unjustified, provided that justice is observed and injustice is avoided. Thus, the wronged person is not allowed to take more than his right or to punish more than the wrong done to him. Allah has commanded this, saying: "So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in like manner as he assaulted you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with the righteous" (Quran 2:194), and "And if you punish [an enemy], then punish with an equivalent of that with which you were afflicted" (Quran 16:126), and "The recompense of an evil deed is an evil deed like it" (Quran 42:40). This seeking of redress is conditioned upon limiting oneself to what Allah has specified and not exceeding it.
