Is it true that Omar ibn al-Khattab used to hit Abu Hurairah and chase him because Abu Hurairah narrated too many hadiths?

Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, prohibited Abu Hurayrah from narrating too many hadiths, fearing that people would become preoccupied with hadith instead of the Qur’an. There is no authentic narration proving that he used to beat him. Even if the story were authentic, there would be no doubt in it, because Umar prohibited Abu Hurayrah when he saw some people turning away from the Qur’an towards hadith. Combining the Qur’an and hadith is مطلوب (desired) and a religious obligation.
