Is intellectual compatibility a reason for choosing a spouse, especially if the young man is a smoker and does not hold a university degree, bearing in mind that the girl is educated and holds a master's degree?

The required compatibility in a husband is compatibility in religion, due to the Almighty's saying: "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you," and due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If there comes to you one whose character and religion you are pleased with, then marry him off. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption." There is no consideration for anything other than religion, such as wealth or status.

A disbeliever is not compatible with a Muslim woman by consensus, and a dissolute person is not compatible with a chaste woman. There is no objection to considering other attributes to achieve closeness between the spouses and the continuity of the marriage.

Based on this, a smoking person is not compatible because smoking is forbidden and has many health harms, and he may transmit this habit to his family. Also, he is not compatible from a social and intellectual perspective. Therefore, it is advisable to stay away from marrying this person, while supplicating to Allah to grant you someone better than him.
