Is the sinner punished for his sin in the Hereafter if he was punished for it in this world?

It is understood from the hadith that the implementation of the hudud (prescribed punishments) serves as an expiation for the sin, even if the punished individual does not repent. This is the view of the majority of scholars.

Al-Shafi'i said: "I prefer for whoever commits a sin and Allah conceals it for him, that he should conceal it himself and repent between himself and his Lord." This is also narrated from Abu Bakr and Umar.

Therefore, one who has committed an offense warranting a hadd punishment does not need to go to a judge and confess. Rather, it is recommended for him to conceal himself, repent, and increase in good deeds, for "indeed, good deeds expiate evil deeds," and "the one who repents from sin is like one who has committed no sin."
