Is a working wife sinful if she does not help her husband with household expenses, knowing that this will lead to problems between them, and what is the ruling concerning the husband in this situation?

Allah has obligated men to provide for their wives and minor children, as stated in the Almighty's words: "Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth" (An-Nisa: 34), and His saying: "And upon the father is their [mothers'] provision and their clothing according to what is reasonable" (Al-Baqarah: 233). Scholars have unanimously agreed on the obligation of this upon the husband.

Although the husband cannot compel his wife to contribute to household expenses, and her money is her own property, if the wife is well-off and her assistance to her husband leads to harmony and sustained affection, or if her not assisting would lead to problems, we advise her to help for the sake of bringing about benefit and warding off harm, and in application of the Almighty's words: "And do not forget graciousness among yourselves. Indeed, Allah, of what you do, is Seeing" (Al-Baqarah: 237).

As for her leaving work merely out of fear that her husband would covet her salary, this should not be done, unless there is a legitimate impediment or hardship.
