What is the importance of Hadith in the life of a Muslim?

The Sunnah is a primary source of legislation, clarifying the rulings of the Quran. Allah the Almighty says: "And We have sent down to you the Dhikr (the Reminder) that you may explain to the people what has been sent down to them," and "Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only an Inspiration revealed." Muslims have unanimously agreed on the authority of the Sunnah, and that the preservation of the Quran depends on its preservation. A group has even held that Allah preserved the Sunnah just as He preserved the Quran, and that the word "Dhikr" in His saying, "Indeed, We have sent down the Dhikr (the Reminder), and indeed, We will be its Guardian," encompasses both. Islam cannot be applied without recourse to the Sunnah, which elaborates on practical rulings, and it also independently establishes some rulings, such as the obligation of Sadaqat al-Fitr (charity of breaking the fast).
