Can the words of Muhammad Rashid Rida concerning the meaning of al-mawaddah (affection/love), especially his saying: "So the sharing by the believing lover of Allah and His Messenger with the one who opposes Allah and His Messenger in the affection that is based on their respective attributes is a combination of two opposites, and it is in the meaning of befriending them, but even more specific than that," be explained and clarified?

This statement is built upon differentiating between loving a disbeliever for their religion (which is unanimously forbidden) and loving them for a specific reason such as kinship, marriage, or worldly benefit. This latter type of love is not forbidden and does not contradict disliking them in religion and disavowing their disbelief. It is possible for a servant's heart to combine religious hatred and innate love due to the difference in motivation. The forbidden *mawālāt* (alliance/loyalty) is showing *mawālāt* to a disbeliever for their disbelief or to a disobedient person for their disobedience. Anything else, such as associating with them or showing kindness, is permissible, in accordance with His, the Almighty’s, saying: "And accompany them in this world with kindness" and "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion... to be kind to them and act justly towards them." The purpose of the prohibition is the affection that is motivated by the disbelievers' fighting against Allah and His Messenger, for this cannot coexist with faith.
