What is the ruling on one who does not feel the greatness of Allah and does not sense His presence, while disliking that, and what is the cure?
Summary: The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the whisperings (waswasah) that the Companions experienced, and he said, "That is pure faith." Imam al-Nawawi mentioned that their reverence for speaking about it is evidence of the completeness of their faith.
To treat waswasah, there are three steps: 1. Explicit declaration of faith: By saying, "I believe in Allah (Aamantu billah)." 2. Seeking refuge in Allah and supplicating: Persistently supplicating with: "O Allah, O Changer of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion." 3. Cutting off the waswasah and diverting one's attention from it: For argumentation only increases it.
However, if the matter goes beyond mere waswasah, it must be treated by increasing certainty (yaqeen) which leads to the fear of Allah and a profound awareness of His greatness and closeness. Certainty increases from three aspects: 1. From the perspective of its means (evidence): The abundance of evidence and proofs of Allah's greatness strengthens certainty. 2. From the perspective of the affirmed issues: The more a person learns about the details of Allah's greatness, the more his faith in them increases, just as the Prophet (peace be upon him) was the one who feared Allah the most due to what he knew of Allah's greatness. 3. From the perspective of the fruit of these proofs (action): A theoretical idea remains weak unless it is transformed into action. The more an action is repeated, the more its strength and firmness in the soul increase. Thus, the more a servant obeys, the more his faith and certainty increase, and the more his transgressions, the less his certainty and the weaker it becomes.
