Among the reprehensible acts (makrooh) during fasting are: tasting something and chewing it unnecessarily, chewing gum that does not contain sugar, kissing, embracing, and touching for one whose desire is aroused, collecting saliva to swallow it, and acts that weaken theaker fasting person such as venesection and cupping. The Malikis added to these: exaggerating in rinsing the mouth and sniffing water (during ablution), smelling perfumes during the day, excessive sleeping during the day, and engaging in idle talk and actions. According to the Shafi'is, using a miswak (tooth-stick) after zawal (midday) is reprehensible.
