What is the ruling of the Sharia regarding the husband of moderate means who does not spend on his wife and children?

The husband must spend on his wife and children equitably, without extravagance or stinginess, according to his means, as Allah Almighty says: (Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted - let him spend from what Allah has given him. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what He has given it).

Indeed, spending is part of the husband's guardianship over his wife, as Allah Almighty says: (Men are the guardians of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property). And in spending there is a great reward for whoever purifies his intention, and neglecting it is a grave sin, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is enough sin for a man to neglect those whom he supports."

The wife and children must consider the husband's circumstances and be content with what Allah has allotted for them, and not burden him beyond his capacity, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Look at those who are beneath you, and do not look at those who are above you, for that is more likely to keep you from despising Allah's favor."
