Should an 'Aqiqah be performed for an illegitimate child?

The Sunnah encourages 'Aqiqah for every newborn generally. The child born out of wedlock is included in the generality of these narrations, so 'Aqiqah should be performed for him. As long as he is attributed to his mother, his mother should perform the 'Aqiqah for him. It is permissible for her to perform the 'Aqiqah for him, and it is even desirable for her to do so. She is also obliged to spend on him if she is able, as he is attributed to her.
