What is the ruling of Islam on eating poultry?

It is permissible to eat chicken and other birds, except for those with talons or those whose killing is forbidden, such as the hoopoe. The permissibility of eating chicken is indicated by what is narrated in the Two Sahihs from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), that he was brought food containing chicken meat, and it was mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to eat from it. Scholars have unanimously agreed on the permissibility of eating chicken, with the exception of those who made an exception for the jallalah (animals that eat filth). Some scholars considered it disliked, but the apparent action of Abu Musa suggests he did not mind it. Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated with a sound chain from Ibn 'Umar that he would keep a jallalah hen for three days.
