What is the ruling on a fasting person spending most of their day watching movies and TV series and playing cards?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Those who are fasting and others must fear Allah and beware of watching lewd films and what is shown on television that violates the Sharia, such as images, songs, and musical instruments, and from playing with musical instruments. This is because such acts lead to the hardening and sickness of hearts, belittling the Sharia, and becoming sluggish in performing duties. Allah (the Most High) said: "And among the people is he who buys diversionary speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." (Surat Luqman, 31:6). And concerning the description of the servants of the Most Merciful: "And those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass by ill speech, they pass by with dignity." (Surat Al-Furqan, 25:72). The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: "There will be people from my nation who will consider unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, wine, and musical instruments to be lawful." These sins diminish the reward of fasting or eliminate it entirely.
