What is the ruling on a fasting person spending most of their day watching movies and TV series and playing cards?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A Muslim, whether fasting or not, must fear Allah and beware of watching obscene films, nude pictures, reprehensible articles, and anything on television that contradicts Allah's law, such as images, songs, musical instruments, and misleading calls. One must also beware of playing with musical instruments due to the hardness of heart, lethargy in fulfilling duties, and falling into forbidden acts that it causes. Allah the Almighty says: (And among the people is he who buys wasteful discourse to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment. And when Our verses are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly as though he had not heard them, as if in his ears were deafness. So give him tidings of a painful punishment), and in the description of the servants of the Most Merciful: (And those who do not bear false witness, and when they pass by ill speech, they pass by with dignity), and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: (There will be among my Ummah people who will consider lawful sexual immorality, silk, alcohol, and musical instruments).
