How accurate is the statement attributed to Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman: "Perhaps an immoral person in his religion, reckless in his livelihood, will enter Paradise due to his leniency"?

The aforementioned tradition (athar) has not been transmitted with a chain of narration (isnad (definition)), and Al-Ghazali mentioned it without an isnad. Its meaning may be sound, as Allah may forgive a believer due to their leniency despite their shortcomings in some acts of obedience, as narrated in the hadith (definition) about the man whom Allah overlooked because of his leniency with those in difficulty. However, this does not diminish the danger of disobedience nor does it lead to complacency regarding acts of worship. Rather, a Muslim must be diligent in avoiding what displeases Allah and strive for what pleases Him.
