It is permissible to work in fashion design and receive payment for it, provided the work is free from prohibitions. These include the unveiling of 'awrah (which for a man is the area between the navel and the knee), or if the designs involve imitation of disbelievers, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." A Muslim in lands of disbelief should be cautious about his religion and consult scholars before undertaking such work.
