Is the response to prayer confined to the laws of cause and effect, or can it transcend them and occur in a miraculous manner?

It is forbidden to transgress in supplication, which means asking for what is not permissible, or what God does not customarily do, such as the immortality of a human being until the Day of Judgment, or the removal of human necessities from him, or asking for what is usually impossible, like the descent of a table from heaven for other than a prophet or a saint. Prophets and saints are excepted from this, due to the miracles and breaches of custom by which they are supported, as well as cases of extreme necessity, in which it is permissible for the distressed person to ask for the removal of harm absolutely, even if it entails a breach of custom.
