Is justice between children obligatory during the period of breastfeeding, and what are the matters in which justice is necessary to avoid obsessive thoughts?
The matters in which justice between children is obligatory are gifts and endowments. As for expenses, they are according to the need of each child, so justice in them is giving each one in need what they require. Breastfeeding a child is obligatory if the child is within the age of breastfeeding. The schools of thought have differed regarding the obligation of a mother breastfeeding her child. The majority believe it is not obligatory for her unless she is the only one available, while the Hanafis believe it is religiously obligatory upon her. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Uthaymeen believe it is obligatory upon the mother as long as she is married. The matter of breastfeeding is similar to that of expenses; justice in it is met by fulfilling the needs of each child according to what suits them, even if the duration and amount vary.
