Al-Suyuti mentioned several narrations from the Salaf concerning the number of letters in the Qur'an, among them the saying of Ibn Abbas: (323,671), and the saying of Umar: (1,000,000). Others reported from Umar: (1,027,000). Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir also mentioned other sayings, such as the saying of Ata': (323,015), the saying of Mujahid: (321,180), and Salam Al-Jumani: (340,740). The chains of narration for these sayings contain weaknesses, and Al-Suyuti considered preoccupation with this matter to be futile, as no great benefit results from it.
