Is the destruction of something considered an act of reciprocal mistreatment, or is it an injustice whose grievance must be redressed?

You did not return the offense in kind, but rather transgressed against what was not rightfully yours. You are responsible for compensating for what you damaged, unless its owner forgives you. Allah Almighty says: "The way is only against those who oppress people and transgress in the earth without right." This verse means that punishment is for those [who commit such acts]. So, if someone aggresses against you, you may aggress against them only to the same extent they aggressed against you. However, it is better to leave it, because the reward for forgiveness is greater, and its status is nobler. Allah Almighty says: "But whoever patiently endures and forgives – indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] strong resolve." And Allah Almighty says: "So whoever pardons and makes reconciliation – his reward is due from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers." And due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Charity does not decrease wealth, and Allah does not increase a servant who forgives except in honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him."
