What is the ruling on the actions of a husband who reminds his wife of his spending on her and fulfilling her needs, compels her to do housework while she is ill, beats her and curses her, hides his money from her, lies to her, and mistreats her family, knowing that he prays, recites the Qur’an, and is kind to her family? And what is the ruling on the wife’s supplication against him?

The spouses are obligated to cohabit in a good manner. If the wife is ill and unable to serve herself, her husband must serve her if he is well-off. The husband is not permitted to make her feel indebted for his spending. It is not permissible for the husband to invoke curses upon his wife unless she has wronged him, in which case the supplication should be commensurate with the wrongdoing, though it is preferable to refrain from it. The relationship between spouses is based on understanding, affection, mercy, and overlooking mistakes.
