Is it forbidden for an adult man to suckle from a woman? And does she become his mother through suckling? And what is the validity of the account that the Mother of the Believers, Aisha, used to send adult men whom she wanted to enter upon her to one of her sisters or nieces so that they would suckle from them, and thereby become unlawful for her? And what is the ruling on this action, if it is true?

The majority of jurists and the four imams are of the view that adult suckling does not establish a prohibitive relationship (mahramiyya), while Aisha and Ibn Hazm held that adult suckling does establish a prohibitive relationship, citing the story of Salim, the mawla of Abu Hudhayfah, and the Prophet's instruction to Abu Hudhayfah's wife to suckle him.

The majority relies on the verse: "And mothers shall suckle their children for two full years," and the hadith: "Suckling is only that which satisfies hunger." They believe that the story of Salim is specific to him and does not apply to others.

Ibn Taymiyyah clarified that Aisha saw a difference between the intention of suckling for nourishment (which does not establish a prohibitive relationship unless it is before weaning) and the intention of suckling to make a person a mahram when there is a need, which is what happened in Salim's story.

The preponderant opinion is that of the majority, as it should not be deviated from. The case of Salim was a solution for a specific circumstance related to adoption before Islam.
