If you divorce your wife three times with a single utterance, the majority of scholars hold that it constitutes an irrevocable major divorce (baynunah kubra), and she is not lawful for you until she marries another husband. Some scholars, however, consider it a single divorce. If you have not previously divorced her, she remains your wife unless her waiting period (iddah) ends without reconciliation. If her iddah ends, you can marry her again with a new contract, dowry, and guardian. The view of the majority of scholars is the sounder one. This ruling applies if you are aware of what you are saying. However, if you were in a state of extreme anger or intoxicated by drugs such that you were unaware of what you were saying, your divorce does not take effect.
