The terms mashī’ah (will) and irādah (desire/intent) are often used interchangeably, although they differ in their original linguistic meanings. Mashī’ah signifies bringing into existence, while irādah means seeking something. Most theologians have equated them, despite their linguistic distinction. The truth is that when ascribed to Allah Almighty, they carry the same meaning, because Allah’s irādah necessitates existence. The difference between them becomes apparent when applied to human beings. Irādah is more general than mashī’ah.
