Is belching loudly forbidden?

Belching is the emission of air with a sound from the stomach through the mouth upon repletion. The prohibition of it in the noble Hadith is due to the prohibition of excessive repletion. Belching loudly is not forbidden, but it is contrary to good manners in the presence of others due to the potential harm it may cause through sound and odor. It is recommended to suppress it as much as possible, or to place a hand or a tissue over the mouth. Some scholars have likened belching to yawning in the recommendation of covering the mouth. Responding to someone who belches by saying "Hanee'an" (May it be wholesome) or "Hanna'aka Allah" (May Allah make it wholesome for you) is not a Sunnah, but rather a customary practice.
