How can one reconcile the Almighty’s saying: "The fornicating woman and the fornicating man—lash each one of them with a hundred lashes" with the Hadith: "The shedding of a Muslim’s blood is not lawful except for one of three [reasons]: ...the married fornicator"?

The noble verse pertains to the unmarried fornicator, and the noble Hadith to the married fornicator. Some scholars have adopted the view of combining lashing and stoning for the married fornicator, citing as evidence the action of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and the Hadith: "The unmarried male with the unmarried female: one hundred lashes and banishment for a year. The married male with the married female: one hundred lashes and stoning." The majority, however, hold the view that stoning alone is sufficient, due to the lack of established evidence from the Prophet (peace be upon him) for combining the two punishments.
